Justice
Iowa's justice system is characterized by overcrowding, lengthy delays in trials, and a focus on punishment over rehabilitation. Existing policies are creating repeat offenders, and the stigma of prior convictions limits opportunities for those who serve their time and wish to reintegrate into society. Changes in the focus of Iowa's justice system can improve the outcomes for all Iowans.
-
Civil Liberties and Human Rights
All Iowans deserve equal protection and rights under Iowa law. Our state constitution and laws must be expanded to strengthen protections for the most vulnerable Iowans.
-
Recidivism and Reentry
Iowa's corrections system focuses on punishment, this focus contributes to the high likelihood of reentry into the state prison systems. A shift toward rehabilitation would benefit all Iowans.
-
Access to Justice
All Iowans deserve competent and dedicated legal representation. An overburdened legal system and a shortage of lawyers leads to increased wait-times and overuse of plea-deals often to the detriment of the accused.
-
Pre-trial Incarceration
Iowans facing accusations deserve respect under the principle of 'assumed innocence' and, unless they are a flight risk or danger to themselves or others, should not be imprisoned while awaiting trial.
