As an educator with family who also serve their community through the educational system in non-teacher roles, I have witnessed firsthand the degradation of our education system. Attacks on teachers and education as a whole have eroded community support for our once-celebrated institutions.

Schools need additional staffing and funding to meet the diverse needs of Iowa's students and its workforce. Funding for additional staffing to meet these needs must be a priority to create pathways to success for students whose post-secondary plans align with the more traditional college-based approach and those that require alternative credentials and certificates.

No Public Money for Private Schools
Iowa's experiment with school vouchers has deprived the already struggling public school system of vital funding. This is exacerbated by a failure to properly adjust school funding to meet inflation.

Chronic absenteeism and cellphone use have proven to be the greatest barriers to educational success in the last several years. By creating enforceable policies to keep students in their classroom and unplugged from social media, we can better serve our students and their future employers.

The Freedom to Teach and Learn
Teachers and students need the freedom to explore all aspects of the human experience. By limiting discussions and access to literature on "divisive concepts," we are limiting the next generation. By lifting book bans and empowering educators, librarians, and school districts to curate an appropriate book collection, we respect educators of all kinds and our students.
